8 Reasons Canada Feels More Supportive Than Portugal as a Solo Mom of Two

Updated: Aug 5

Becoming a Solo Mom of Two: Embracing the Journey in Canada

Becoming a solo mom of two has reshaped everything I thought I knew about parenting, community, and survival. As someone who has lived in both Portugal and Canada, and visited Portugal recently with kids, I’ve noticed distinct differences in the way each country supports mothers. This is especially true for those parenting solo, neurodivergent children, or walking the less traditional path of homeschooling and intuitive living.

The Unique Support for Solo Moms in Canada

Here are the top things I find more helpful in Canada than in Portugal as a solo mom:

1. Free Healthcare & Child Development Support

Canada’s public healthcare system makes it easier to access pediatric care, developmental assessments (like autism/ADHD), and therapy. There’s also a stronger emphasis on early intervention, which can be life-changing. This support is invaluable for any parent, especially when navigating the complexities of raising children.

2. Neurodivergent Support Systems

There’s greater public understanding and infrastructure for neurodivergent kids. From school accommodations to sensory-friendly events and community resources, Canada is more inclusive overall. It feels reassuring to know that my children can receive the support they need to thrive.

3. Homeschooling Legitimacy & Resources

Homeschooling is legal, recognized, and supported in Canada. With co-ops, online tools, free educational programs, and public library resources, the path is far less isolating here. I appreciate the variety of options available to tailor my children’s education to their unique needs.

4. Financial & Social Supports for Solo Moms

Canada offers the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for all moms, subsidized daycare, housing support, and solo parent support programs. These make a huge difference when you're parenting without a partner or family nearby. Knowing that there are resources available helps ease some of the financial burdens.

5. Free or Discounted Public Transportation

In many cities, kids under 13 ride public transit for free. Plus, there are subsidies for low-income families and stroller-friendly transit options. This accessibility allows us to explore our community without worrying about transportation costs.

6. Freedom to Parent Differently

In Canada, there’s more social acceptance of gentle parenting, solo motherhood, and choosing paths like unschooling or slow living. There’s less judgment and more support, which creates a nurturing environment for both me and my children.

7. Logistical Ease

From booking doctor appointments online to accessing benefits with a few clicks, Canada's digital infrastructure lightens the mental load for solo parents. It’s a relief to have these tools at my fingertips, making everyday tasks a bit easier.

8. Free Family-Friendly Spaces & Nature Access

Between splash pads, libraries, trails, and community events, there’s no shortage of free or low-cost activities that are accessible and inclusive. These spaces allow us to connect with others and enjoy quality time together as a family.

The Emotional Journey of Solo Parenting

Raising children alone is never easy, but in Canada, I’ve found more structure, support, and social understanding that truly helps me breathe a little easier. Even though it was hard to come back to Canada after staying in Portugal for four weeks with the incredible support of family, Canada will be my choice while raising children for all the reasons I listed above.

Finding Community and Connection

One of the most important aspects of parenting is finding a community. In Canada, I’ve discovered numerous groups and organizations that cater to solo parents. These spaces provide a sense of belonging and understanding. Connecting with others who share similar experiences has been a source of strength for me.

Embracing the Challenges

Every day presents new challenges. Whether it’s managing schedules or dealing with unexpected situations, I remind myself that I’m not alone. There are resources and people ready to help. Embracing these challenges has made me a stronger and more resilient parent.

Celebrating Small Victories

I’ve learned to celebrate the small victories. Whether it’s a successful outing or a peaceful bedtime routine, these moments matter. They remind me that I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.

Looking Ahead

As I continue this journey, I’m excited about the future. I know that with the support available in Canada, I can provide a nurturing environment for my children. I’m committed to being the best mom I can be, and I’m grateful for the resources that make this possible.

What are other benefits you find in Canada that are not available in your home country?

In conclusion, my experience as a solo mom in Canada has been filled with both challenges and rewards. The support systems in place have made a significant difference in our lives. I encourage other parents to explore the resources available to them. Together, we can navigate this beautiful journey of parenthood.
